Band 7+: Government should spend money on railways rather than roads

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, transportation plays a pivotal role in our overall development, which is why a significant portion of government funds is allocated towards infrastructure projects. There is a debate about whether the government should prioritize investment in road construction over railways. In this essay, I will outline my perspective to support the notion that investing in roads is more advantageous than in railways.

First and foremost, there is a widespread preference for traveling by road due to its flexibility, comfort, and cost-effectiveness. In recent years, traffic congestion has become a prominent issue in many nations. This can be attributed to the increasing number of vehicles on the roads. Expanding road infrastructure, such as wider streets, is crucial in addressing this problem. Developed nations have successfully managed traffic congestion through the expansion of road networks. Furthermore, unauthorized parking is a common issue in urban areas, and an expanded road system would provide a catalyst for further urban development.

Conversely, trains are acknowledged for their environmental friendliness compared to other modes of transport such as buses and cars. Trains have the capacity to transport a large number of passengers and heavy cargo simultaneously, reducing the overall carbon footprint. For instance, the construction of a metro train system in Dhaka has already demonstrated the potential for enhancing public transportation and reducing environmental impact. However, it should be noted that such large-scale infrastructure projects require significant time and capital investment.

In conclusion, it is my belief that government efforts should prioritize investment in road infrastructure over railways, considering the flexibility and convenience it offers to the public. Nonetheless, environmental considerations and the efficiency of railways should not be overlooked in the overall transportation planning and development.
