The pie chart given compares the percentages of five different kinds of books sold by a bookseller between 1972 and 2012, at 20-year intervals.
Looking at the illustration, it is immediately evident that adult fiction and children’s fiction showed increase in the percentage of these kinds, whereas the opposite was true for others. Additionally, biography was consistently the sector with the lowest percentage in most years.
In 1972, the others dominated the chart, with a quarter of all kinds surveyed sold by a bookseller, which was 5% higher than the figure for adult fiction, children’s fiction, and biography. Travel came in last at 15%. In 1992, adult fiction had reached a peak at 25%, overtaking others to become the bestseller.
In 2012, the percentage of adult fiction and children’s fiction had risen dramatically to 45% and 25%, respectively. Books’ kinds declined in biography and travel remained the least at 8% and 10%, respectively. Other kinds of books also dropped sharply to 12% after 40 years.
