The charts compare the number of Japanese citizens who travelled overseas for holidays between 1985 and 1995, and the proportion of Australia’s share in the Japanese tourist market.
Overall, the total number of Japanese travellers increased dramatically over the decade, while Australia’s share of this market showed some fluctuations but ended with a slight decline after reaching its peak in 1993.
In 1985, about 5 million Japanese people travelled abroad. This figure more than doubled to approximately 11 million by 1990. In the following year (1991), there was a small dip, but numbers quickly rose again, reaching around 15 million by 1995.
As for Australia’s share, it began at 2% in 1985 and increased steadily to 5% by 1988. Although there was a minor fall to around 4-4.5% in 1989, the proportion grew gradually to just over 6% in 1993, before slightly decreasing to 6% in the final year..
