Overall, it can be seen that New York City subway has the most number of lines and the London Tube has the least. Additionally, it is interesting to note that, London’s underground system has the highest ticket price while also having the lowest passenger journeys.
If we take a look at the metro and subway lines, it is noticeable that New York City subway has the most number of lines at 24, covering almost 660 miles. In addition, Beijing subway has 19 lines, covering a distance of 357 miles. Paris metro comes in third with 16 lines with a total length of 127 miles. Furthermore, London, Mexico City and Tokyo have a similar number of lines with the total length covered by London Tube being 249 miles and Mexico and Tokyo spanning under 200 miles.
Comparing annual journeys and ticket costs, it can be observed that higher the cost of a ticket, lesser the number of annual trips taken. Beijing subway system has 3.6 billion journeys taken yearly, with a ticket price of 0.45$ per person. Tokyo is in second place with 3,1 billion journeys, at a price of 1.64$ per person. However, London tube has the lowest number of annual journeys, of 1.2 billion. The ticket price for a single ticket of the London tube is the highest among the countries compared at 7.30$. Mexico City has the cheapest ticket fare at 0.23$ for a single ticket.
