Overall, we can see a downward trend in both shop closures and openings in one country. Although the number of shop closures suddenly boomed in the last 3 years, the number of shop openings continued to decrease.
The number of shop closures in 2011 was around 6400. This figure witnessed a dramatic fluctuation until 2018 when the number was approximately 6200, which was almost the same. But in 2013, the number of shop closures reached its peak of around 7200, which was the highest number of all time. Then there was a sudden decrease until 2015, an all-time low number under 1000. From then, the number was up again and reached over 5000 in 2018.
On the other hand, in 2012, there was a remarkable decrease, which was almost 4500 less than in 2011. Before that, the number of shop openings was at its peak. The number of shop openings fluctuated between 2012 and 2015, between 4000 and 6000. Then it slightly decreased, dropping to 3000.
