Should children learn a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school?
Many countries in Europe and Asia have their kids study multiple languages from a young age. While this can be difficult for younger learners, results have shown that it is generally more effective.
The main advantage of learning a foreign language early in life is that children have strong natural language-acquisition abilities between the ages of five and ten. During this period, the brain shows remarkable skills in recognising sounds and detecting patterns in phonetics.
However, there are also some disadvantages. Younger children may struggle with maintaining focus, and schools may lack qualified teachers who can teach languages effectively at the primary level. In addition, some argue that children should first build a strong foundation in their native language before taking on another one.
Overall, although starting a foreign language in primary school presents a few challenges, the benefits seem to outweigh the drawbacks. Early exposure helps children develop better pronunciation and confidence, and it makes learning more natural. Therefore, I believe that introducing foreign languages at a younger age is generally a good idea.
