From an overall perspective, in the UK, in the first year, spending on leisure reached its peak at 27%. In New Zealand, spending on food and drink was the highest at 29%. However, by 2008, spending on food and utilities showed an upward trend in both countries.
In 1980, utility bills were 26% in the UK and 27% in New Zealand. At the same time, spending on transport was 15% and 18%, respectively. Leisure was the dominant category in the UK at 27%.
By 2008, leisure remained the largest category, increasing to 34% in the UK and 31% in New Zealand. Utility bills rose slightly in the UK to 28% but decreased in New Zealand to 25%. Spending on food and drink fell in both countries, while transport stayed almost the same. Other activities also increased to 11% in the UK and 13% in New Zealand.
