Band 8+: Information technology enables many people to do their work outside their workplace (e.g. at home, when travelling, etc.). Do the benefits of this mobility outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Mobile technology has become an integral part of human life, and electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets have made it possible for many people to work outside their office. The benefits of this increased mobility, facilitated by information technology, outweigh the disadvantages.

The advantages of using mobile technology for remote work are evident. One of the most significant benefits is the improvement of people’s work-life balance. The development of information technology, ranging from cloud technology to team collaboration software, enables staff members to use the same tools and software that they would access in the traditional workplace. In this case, more businesses are likely to offer flexible working hours, allowing employees to fit their working schedules around important commitments in daily life, such as childcare. In addition, electronic devices can enhance efficiency. This is because they serve as a means of completing unfinished tasks remotely when office hours are limited. For example, phone calls can be made at home, and electronic documents can be read or written on public transport or in cafes. This is particularly beneficial for people who have long trips to work.

On the other hand, there are also disadvantages to consider. First, potential health problems may arise from this mobility. People coming to the workplace usually have break time when they meet their colleagues or bosses, talking about work and life or simply having a coffee. Without a reminder of such break time at home, some telecommuters will lose track of the hours spent on a task; as a result, they might remain in a fixed posture for extended periods, which potentially leads to health issues in the neck, shoulders, wrists and other areas. It is also likely that individuals who enjoy the benefits of working on public transport annoy passengers around them. For instance, some travellers speak loudly on their phones, showing a lack of consideration for others who might prefer a quieter environment.

In conclusion, many people profit from the mobility offered by information technology in terms of better work-life balance and greater efficiency. As long as they keep an eye on how much they rely on this resource and how they use it, the benefits generally outweigh the negative aspects.
