Overall, Europe experienced upward trend in late in the middle of the period, while Asia underwent a decline followed by a strong recovery by 2000. Meanwhile, the rest of the world showed a steady increase throughout the period.
Regarding 1840, Asia accounted for the largest proportion of the manufacturing output at around 50%, compared to 40% in Europe, and just 10% in other regions.
However, the Asia showed a significant decrease to 30% in 1880 and reached a low to 20% in 1920. In contrast, Europe’s production from 40% to reached a peak of 50% in 1920.
By 1960, Asia’s production gradually recovered, increasing to approximately one fifth and then experienced steady increase too 45% in 2000. On the other hand, Europe’s production share declined steadily to about 28% in 2000. The rest of the world showed consistent, rising from 10% in 1840 to just over one third at the end of the period.
