Overall, it can be seen that car accounted for the highest proportion of transport usage throughout the period. By contrast, walking remained the least popular form of transport over the two decades. In addition, bicycle usage increased significantly by 2020 and eventually overtook car usage.
In 2000, car usage accounted for the highest proportion at 45%, while bicycle represented the second largest share at 25%. Over the following decade, the percentage of people using cars declined steadily to 35% in 2010. By contrast, bicycle usage increased to 30% in 2005 before falling slightly to 24% in 2015. After that, it rose sharply and eventually overtook car usage, reaching 35% in final year, whereas the figure for cars decline to 30%.
In terms of buses and walking, bus usage stood at 20% in 2000 before increasing slightly and overtaking bicycle usage at 30% in 2015. However, the figure declined again to 22% in 2020. By contrast, walking remained the least popular from of transport throughout the period. It accounted for 10% in first year before rising slightly to 12% in 2015, where it remained stable in 2010. Finally, the proportion of people walking increased modestly to 13% in the final year.
