Answers & Explanations Summary

# Answer Evidence Explanation
Q1 1 year / one year / a year A year in Adelaide and six months in Sydney Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows that Sara lived in Adelaide for one year and in Sydney for six months.
Answer Explanation:
The answer is '1 year' because it completes the total length of time she has spent in Australia.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is '1 year' because the transcript says Sara spent 'a year in Adelaide and six months in Sydney.' Since 'six months' is the same as 'half a year,' and the form already has the words 'and a half,' you only need to write '1 year' or 'one year' to make the total time correct.
Q2 Forest / Forrest SARA: Flat one, five three nine Forest Road, Canterbury. And the post code is two, o, three, six Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows Sara telling the person her address. She says her home is on Forest Road.
Answer Explanation:
The answer 'Forest' is the name of the street where Sara currently lives.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is 'Forest' because Sara says this when she gives her address to Lynda. In the transcript, she tells Lynda that she lives on 'Forest Road'. The form asks for the name of the road before the word 'Road'.
Q3 Academic I was studying General English in Adelaide and now I'm doing Academic English, because I'm trying to get into Medicine next year Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows that Sara finished studying General English before and is now enrolled in Academic English.
Answer Explanation:
The answer is the specific type of English course Sara is currently taking.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is 'Academic' because Sara explains she is currently studying 'Academic English' to prepare for medical school next year. Sara mentions that while she was studying 'General English' in another city (Adelaide) in the past, her present course in Sydney is different. Keywords to look for are 'now I'm doing', which indicates her current situation.
Q4 Thursday SARA: My cousin arrives on Friday morning, so I'd better be out on Thursday.LYNDA: What, the seventh of September?SARA: Yes, that's right Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows that Sara needs to move because a family member is arriving on Friday. She tells Lynda that she should leave on Thursday, and they both agree that this day is September 7.
Answer Explanation:
The answer is Thursday, which is the specific day of the week Sara needs to move into her new home.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is Thursday because Sara explains that her cousin is coming to stay at her current place on Friday. Because of this, she needs to leave and start her new housing one day before, which is Thursday. Lynda confirms that this Thursday is the seventh of September, which matches the information on the form.
Q5 B Can I share a room with someone else? I've been alone in my room at my aunt's and I've always shared with my sister and I like that Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows Sara asking for a roommate because she does not like being in a room by herself and is used to sharing a room with her sister.
Answer Explanation:
The answer B is correct because a twin room is a room where two people stay together. Sara wants to share her room with one other person.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is B because Sara specifically asks if she can share her room with another person. She explains that she has been alone in her current room and prefers sharing because she used to share with her sister. A room meant for two people is called a twin room, which matches Sara's request to not be alone.
Q6 B Do you have any women living alone, retired women Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows Sara asking if she can stay with a woman who lives by herself without other people.
Answer Explanation:
The answer is that Sara wants to stay in a home with only one person.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is B because when Lynda asks Sara if she wants to live with a family or a single person, Sara specifically asks for women living alone. A person who is living alone is the same as a single person.
Q7 A Most of them live in flats, but that's not a problem for you, is it?SARA: Not at all. I'm used to that. My aunt lives in a flat too, remember. I'm not used to a big house with a garden, swimming pool, pets and all that Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows Lynda asking if living in a flat is okay. Sara replies that it is fine because she currently lives in a flat. She explains that she does not feel comfortable in a large house with a garden or pool.
Answer Explanation:
The answer means Sara wants to live in a flat, which is a set of rooms inside a larger building for living in.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is 'A' because Sara agrees when Lynda mentions that many of the available hosts live in flats. Sara says she is 'used to that' because her aunt also lives in a flat. She specifically says she is 'not used to' a 'big house,' which means a house is not what she wants.
Q8 deposit You'll have to pay me three hundred and twenty dollars as a deposit before you move in Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows Lynda telling the student that a payment of 320 dollars is required as a deposit before she can move into her new home.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "deposit" is a special payment a person makes at the start of renting a room to protect the owner from costs if something is broken.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is "deposit" because Lynda tells Sara that she needs to pay three hundred and twenty dollars ($320) before moving into the homestay. This money is called a deposit and serves as "insurance" for any damage that might happen while Sara lives there.
Q9 monthly You'll need to pay monthly to me, by cash or cheque, I don't mind Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows Lynda telling Sara that she has to make her payments every month, and she can choose to use either cash or a cheque.
Answer Explanation:
The answer means Sara needs to give the rent money once every month.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is "monthly" because Lynda explains the payment schedule to Sara. She says that Sara needs to make her payments every month. The sentence in the task uses the phrase "on a monthly basis," which is the same as saying "pay monthly." Lynda also mentions using "cash or cheque," which matches the sentence in the task.
Q10 telephone / phone You don't need to pay for gas, electricity or water, but you will need to pay your proportion of the phone bill Excerpt/Transcript Explanation:
The transcript shows that some costs like gas and water are included, but the student must pay her part of the money for using the phone.
Answer Explanation:
The answer is 'telephone' or 'phone', which is the word for the system used to talk to someone in a different place.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is found in the section where Lynda explains the bills. She tells Sara that while things like water and gas are free, Sara must pay her own share of the bill for using the phone. The word 'proportion' in the text means 'part' or 'share', matching the sentence in the task.

Transcript

LYNDA: Sara, I've heard that you want to move into a homestay family. Is that correct?

SARA: Yes, that's right. I've been staying with my aunt and now my cousin is arriving from Singapore and my aunt needs the room for him.

LYNDA: Oh, that's bad luck. Well, I'll need to get some particulars first. Sara, what's your full name?

SARA: Sara Lim, and that's Sara without the 'h' at the end.

LYNDA: Mmm. How old are you, Sara?

SARA: Twenty-three, only just. It was my birthday on the twenty-first of August.

LYNDA: Happy birthday for yesterday. How long have you been in Australia?

SARA: A year in Adelaide and six months in Sydney. I prefer Sydney, I've got more friends here.

LYNDA: What's your address at your aunt's house?

SARA: Flat one, five three nine Forest Road, Canterbury. And the post code is two, o, three, six.

LYNDA: OK. What are you studying now?

SARA: I was studying General English in Adelaide and now I'm doing Academic English, because I'm trying to get into Medicine next year.

LYNDA: That sounds good, but it'll take you a long time. When would you like to move out from your aunt's?

SARA: My cousin arrives on Friday morning, so I'd better be out on Thursday.

LYNDA: What, the seventh of September?

SARA: Yes, that's right.

LYNDA: That doesn't leave us much time. Right, OK. I need to know what kind of accommodation you'd like, so I can get you something suitable.

SARA: Can I share a room with someone else? I've been alone in my room at my aunt's and I've always shared with my sister and I like that.

LYNDA: Yes, fine. That'll save you money too. Would you like to live with a family or do you think that a single person would be better for you? I have lots of very nice single people on my books.

SARA: Do you have any women living alone, retired women?

LYNDA: Yes, I have quite a few whose children have grown up and left home. In fact, I have some really lovely retired ladies, living by themselves, who just love the company of students. Most of them live in flats, but that's not a problem for you, is it?

SARA: Not at all. I'm used to that. My aunt lives in a flat too, remember. I'm not used to a big house with a garden, swimming pool, pets and all that.

LYNDA: OK, fine. I know quite a bit about what you want now. I should let you know that your rent will be a hundred and sixty dollars per week. You'll have to pay me three hundred and twenty dollars as a deposit before you move in. The deposit is as insurance, in case you break something. You'll need to pay monthly to me, by cash or cheque, I don't mind. You don't need to pay for gas, electricity or water, but you will need to pay your proportion of the phone bill. Most families do that on an honour system, but you'll have to wait and see.

SARA: Mmm.

LYNDA: Have you got any more questions for me?

SARA: When will you know where I can go?

LYNDA: I'll work on it now, so come and see me tomorrow and I should have some news for you then.

SARA: Thanks a lot.

LYNDA: Goodbye. See you tomorrow - after lunch would be better for me.

SARA: OK, see you then. Bye.
