I think it has changed a lot since my grandparents' time. In the past, when celebrating an exchange gift party, the gift was only an acting part. The main part of the ceremonies was hanging out, playing with each other, joking, and having fun. We used to not care about the presents as much as now, when it's not only about respect but also about what is paid and earned.
