Overall, wheat exports increased in both Canada and the European Community despite some fluctuations, whereas Australia’s exports declined steadily throughout the period. Canada recorded the highest export figure during most of the period, while the European Community finished as the largest exporter.
Australia and the European Community started at similar levels, exporting approximately 15 and 16 million tonnes respectively. Australia’s exports rose slightly to around 16 million tonnes in 1986 before falling steadily to approximately 11 million by 1989, where they remained unchanged in 1990. By contrast, the European Community’s exports declined to about 14 million tonnes in 1986, remained stable at around 15 million between 1987 and 1988, and then increased sharply to roughly 19 million in 1989 and 21 million by the end of the period.
Canada began as the leading exporter, with around 19 million tonnes in 1985. Although exports fell slightly to approximately 17 million in the following year, they rose steadily to a peak of 25 million tonnes in 1988. This was followed by a dramatic decline to around 14 million tonnes in 1989 before exports recovered to approximately 19 million tonnes in 1990.
