In today’s world, the differences between countries become less clarified each year and have evolved significantly, bringing both positive and negative implications that warrant careful examination. People are sharing the same fashions, advertising, brands, eating habits and even TV channels. Despite some obvious advantages of this trend, I would argue that these are outweighed by disadvantages.
On the one hand, the growing similarity between countries in the world offers some certain benefits in terms of multicultural relationships and users’ various choices. The first general advantage is that it will build a connection among countries which make their relationships become stronger. This leads to easier international communication and cultural exchange where people can share experiences about brands, cuisine, fashions and so on. In addition, the accessibility to those products including clothes and cosmetics will be expanded because the demands between people are familiar, so that there will be a large amount of merchandise for consumers to select. As a result, the increasing similarity among nations is good because of the tight global connections it makes and the greater products are produced.
On the other hand, thriving with uniformity may erode cultural identity and damage the local economy. When there are no differences among parts of the world, this leads to the loss of cultural heritage and indigenous traditions. Their unique features including cuisine, customs, and traditional clothing may fade in a short period and a civilization will also disappear due to the less preservation by the younger generation. For example, young people nowadays adopt the global trends instead of having an eye on traditional customs so the outcome is worse and worse day by day. Moreover, they also have negative effects on the diversity of cultures. When the cities around the world begin to look and feel familiar, it will come to cultural homogenization and reduce the uniqueness of cultures. This leads to the less common experiences in various traditions around the earth. In short, growing with similarity should be prevented because of the erosion of traditional customs and the reduced cultural diversity.
In conclusion, while globalization and shared lifestyles can improve international connectivity and consumer choice, I firmly believe that the long-term loss of cultural diversity and the uniqueness of traditions is more significant. Therefore, the disadvantages of this phenomenon outweigh its advantages.
