Band 9: some universities offer online courses as an alternative to class delivered on campus. Do you think this is a positive or negative development,

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s interconnected world, many universities now offer online courses as an alternative to traditional on-campus classes. While virtual learning provides certain advantages, this essay will argue that it is generally less effective than in-person education due to its ability to foster greater focus and engagement, as well as its role in building and reinforcing robust study habits.

Some proponents of online learning may argue that it offers a multitude of practical benefits, such as flexible study hours and the convenience of being able to study virtually anywhere with a decent wifi connection and an electronic device, all of which are widely available and accessible to most modern-day students. These are all valid points, but the sheer ubiquity of distractions on the Internet and online platforms is already enough to diminish its potential advantages and further proves that online learning is inferior to its physical counterpart. To further elaborate on this claim, face-to-face learning takes the willpower required to resist submission to such distractions completely out of the equation by providing a disturbance-free environment. Moreover, the increased levels of boredom resulting from this deprivation of distractions are then subconsciously channeled into the ongoing lecture or lesson at hand, indirectly enhancing students’ focus and interest in the topic or knowledge being taught. According to a 2023 survey conducted at Queensland University in Australia, 78% of students claimed to have rekindled that lost enthusiasm in their academic pursuits after transitioning to physical seminars and lectures after a long period of online learning caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moreover, our human brains tend to link a certain set of actions to a cue, and this cue, most of the time, happens to be a location or a specific time of the day. This is called habit formation, and by applying its principle, students can foster strong and beneficial study habits that last for a lifetime. But the formation of such study habits, as previously mentioned, can only start by doing certain tasks at a certain time or place or ideally both, can almost only be achieved by offline classes given the unstable nature of its online counterparts.

To conclude, despite possessing some potential advantages, online learning methods pale in comparison to the traditional, orthodox offline classes with numerous scientifically proven and practical benefits.
