This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 13 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 3 Test 1 question:
“Are there any programmes/shows you don’t like watching? [Why/why not?]”
Sample 1: Yes
Absolutely, there are quite a few. For example, I find it difficult to stomach horror series. The reason being, they tend to instill a sense of fear and uneasiness in me. The eerie background music, the jump scares, and the suspenseful build-ups – all these elements combined, rather than entertaining me, make me jittery. It’s just something that doesn’t sit well with me.
Sample 2: Yes
Yes, indeed. I’m not particularly fond of reality TV shows. The primary reason is the level of drama and conflict they intentionally incorporate for ratings. It feels inauthentic and often promotes negativity. Moreover, the idea of exploiting real people’s lives for entertainment consumption just doesn’t resonate with me.
Sample 3: Yes
In fact, there are. I’m not a fan of violent series. The graphic depictions of violence, blood, and gore make me uncomfortable. I understand that such elements can be integral to the plot, but I personally prefer a more subtle approach to storytelling. The intense visuals often distract me from the actual narrative.
Sample 4: Yes
As a visual person, I find documentaries somewhat lacking. They are often long-winded and don’t use the medium’s full potential to captivate viewers. They’re not always visually stimulating or creative, relying heavily on facts and figures which can come off as dull. Therefore, I usually lean towards visually rich genres such as animation or fantasy.
Sample 5: Yes
Certainly, I find it difficult to enjoy television adaptations that don’t do justice to their source material. When I know a series is based on a well-loved book or a classic film, I expect a certain level of depth and quality. However, poor adaptations often fail to capture the essence of the original, leading to a disappointing viewing experience.
Sample 6: No
Well, I’m someone who takes an omnivore’s approach to television. I believe that every program, regardless of genre or quality, has something unique to offer. Even the ones that many people might find uninteresting or irritating, I find them to be enlightening in their own way. It provides a window into different perspectives, cultures, and mindsets.
Sample 7: No
Frankly speaking, there’s no show that I’ve come across which I’ve actively avoided. As an open-minded individual, I believe in giving every production a fair chance. Even if a show doesn’t resonate with me initially, I try to understand its core message and the values it aims to convey. This approach has often led to some surprising discoveries and deeper understandings.
Sample 8: No
In my case, there aren’t any shows that I don’t enjoy. I see each one as a window into different cultures, personalities, and lifestyles. Even when a show is set in a context that’s completely foreign to me, I find it fascinating to explore and understand these unfamiliar perspectives. It’s like embarking on a cultural journey without ever leaving my living room!
Sample 9: No
To be honest, there’s no particular show that I dislike. As an avid language learner, I use shows as a tool to pick up new languages and understand different accents. Hence, every show, irrespective of its content or genre, offers me a chance to broaden my linguistic skills and comprehension.
Sample 10: No
To be honest with you, I don’t think there are any shows that I don’t like to watch. My taste in television is rather eclectic, spanning from crime dramas to animated series. I believe that this diverse palette of entertainment keeps my interest piqued and my perspectives fresh. It’s like sampling different dishes from a vast buffet – each one brings its own flavor to the table.
