This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 9 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 1 Test 3 question:
“How often do you make telephone calls? [Why/Why not?]”
Sample 1: Regularly
I frequently use the phone for work-related reasons, at least three or five times a day. In my occupation, it’s crucial to maintain clear lines of communication with my colleagues, so I regularly make and receive calls, even if it’s just for a brief check-in.
Sample 2: Regularly
I make phone calls quite a lot, mainly because my family lives in a different city. I find that talking to them over the phone helps bridge the physical distance, and it’s a nice way to keep up with their lives.
Sample 3: Regularly
I dial numbers quite regularly, primarily to keep in touch with my friends. We are all quite busy, so grabbing a coffee or meeting up isn’t always feasible. A quick phone call helps us stay connected and catch up on each other’s lives.
Sample 4: Moderately
I usually reach out to people via the phone on a balanced basis, not too frequently, nor too rarely. My career in consulting demands a fair amount of telephone conversations, but I tend to reserve my calls for those matters that require a more in-depth discussion or a personal touch.
Sample 5: Moderately
I make phone calls moderately. As an entrepreneur, I have to juggle a lot of balls. While telephone calls are essential for business, I prefer to keep them to a minimum to avoid disruptions in my workflow.
Sample 6: Moderately
I ring up people moderately because I believe in meaningful conversations rather than frequent ones. I prefer to engage in dialogues that add value and are not just a routine or a way to pass the time.
Sample 7: Rarely
I seldom make telephone calls since I’m a big fan of face-to-face communication. There’s something about seeing the other person’s facial expressions and body language that just makes the conversation more meaningful and authentic.
Sample 8: Rarely
I don’t usually make many phone calls due to my hectic professional life. My job consumes a large portion of my day, and I barely have time for leisurely chats. I mostly resort to quick texts or emails for necessary communication.
Sample 9: Rarely
I rarely make phone calls because I tend to lean more toward digital communication platforms like email or social media. They provide a more convenient and quicker way to exchange information, especially when dealing with multiple tasks at the same time.
Sample 10: It Depends
For me, the frequency of making phone calls is seasonal. During festive times or holidays, I tend to make a lot of calls to connect with family and friends. But outside of these periods, I’m not really one to often engage in telephone conversations.
