Speaker 1 (1)
Hello. Jane Fairbanks speaking.
Speaker 2 (2)
Oh, good morning. My name's Frank Pritchard. I've just retired and moved to Southoe.
Speaker 2 (3)
I'd like to become a volunteer, and I gather you coordinate voluntary work in the village?
Speaker 1 (4)
That's right.
Speaker 2 (5)
What sort of thing could I do?
Speaker 1 (6)
Well, we need help with the village library.
Speaker 1 (7)
We borrow books from the town library, and individuals also donate them.
Speaker 1 (8)
So one thing you could do is get involved in collecting them, if you've got a car, that is.
Speaker 2 (9)
Yes. That's no problem.
Speaker 1 (10)
The times are pretty flexible, so we can arrange it to suit you.
Speaker 1 (11)
Oh, another thing is the records that we keep of the books we're given, and those we borrow and need to return to the town library.
Speaker 1 (12)
It would be very useful to have another person to help keep them up to date.
Speaker 2 (13)
Right. I'm used to working on a computer - I presume they're computerized?
Speaker 2 (15)
Is the library purpose-built? I haven't noticed it when I've walked around the village.
Speaker 1 (16)
No. We simply have the use of a room in the village hall, the West Room.
Speaker 1 (17)
It's on the left as you go in.
Speaker 2 (18)
I must go and have a look inside the hall.
Speaker 1 (19)
Yes. It's a nice building.
Speaker 2 (20)
Do you run a lunch club in the village for elderly people? I know a lot of places do.
Speaker 1 (21)
Yes. We have a very successful club.
Speaker 2 (22)
I could help with transport if that's of any use.
Speaker 1 (23)
Oh, definitely. People come to the club from neighboring villages, and we're always in need of more drivers.
Speaker 2 (24)
And does the club have groups that focus on a particular hobby, too?
Speaker 2 (25)
I could get involved in one or two, particularly if there are any art groups.
Speaker 1 (26)
Excellent. I'll find out where we need help and get back to you.
Speaker 2 (27)
Fine. What about help for individual residents? Do you arrange that at all?
Speaker 1 (28)
Yes. We do it as a one off.
Speaker 1 (29)
Oh, in fact, there's Mrs Caroll. She needs a lift to the hospital next week, and we're struggling to find someone.
Speaker 2 (30)
When's her appointment?
Speaker 1 (31)
On Tuesday, it would take the whole morning.
Speaker 2 (32)
I could do that.
Speaker 1 (33)
Oh, that would be great. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (34)
And also next week, we're arranging to have some work done to Mr Selsbury’s house before he moves, As he isn't healthy enough to do it himself.
Speaker 1 (35)
We've got some people to decorate his kitchen, but if you could do some weeding in his garden, That would be wonderful.
Speaker 2 (36)
Okay. I'll enjoy that. And presumably, the day and time are flexible.
Speaker 1 (37)
Oh, yes. Just say when would suit you best, and we'll let Mr Sellsbury know.
Speaker 1 (39)
The volunteers group also organises monthly social events, Which is a great way to meet other people, of course.
Speaker 1 (41)
So next month, on the 19th October, We're holding a quiz.
Speaker 1 (42)
A couple of residents are great at planning unusual ones, and we always fill the village hall.
Speaker 2 (43)
That sounds like fun. Can I do anything to help?
Speaker 1 (44)
Well, because of the number of people, we need plenty of refreshments for halfway through, so if you could provide any, we'd be grateful.
Speaker 2 (45)
I'm sure I could. I'll think about what to make and let you know.
Speaker 1 (46)
Thank you. Then on November 18th, we're holding a dance, also in the village hall.
Speaker 1 (47)
We've booked a band that specialises in music of the 1930s.
Speaker 1 (48)
They've been before, and we've had a lot of requests to bring them back.
Speaker 2 (49)
I'm not really a dancer, but I'd like to do something to help.
Speaker 1 (50)
Well, we sell tickets in advance, and having an extra person to check them at the door as people arrive would be good.
Speaker 1 (51)
It can be quite a bottleneck if everyone arrives at once.
Speaker 2 (52)
Okay. I'm happy with that.
Speaker 1 (53)
We're also arranging a New Year's Eve party.
Speaker 1 (54)
We're expecting that to be a really big event, so instead of the village hall, it'll be held in the Mountfort Hotel.
Speaker 1 (56)
Mountfort. M-O-U-N-T-F-O-R-T Hotel.
Speaker 1 (57)
It isn't in Southoe itself, but it's only a couple of miles away.
Speaker 1 (58)
The hotel will be providing dinner, and we've booked a band.
Speaker 1 (59)
The one thing we haven't got yet is a poster.
Speaker 1 (60)
That isn't something you could do by any chance, is it?
Speaker 2 (61)
Well, actually, yes. Before I retired, I was a graphic designer, so that's right up my street.
Speaker 1 (62)
Oh, perfect. I'll give you the details, and then perhaps you could send me a draft?
