Answers & Explanations Summary
| # | Answer | Evidence | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Reception Assistant | The first job is Reception Assistant at the Parkview Hotel | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript clearly states that the role available at the Parkview Hotel is called Reception Assistant. Answer Explanation: The answer means a front desk helper who welcomes guests and checks them in at a hotel. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is Reception Assistant because the agent introduces the job at the Parkview Hotel by saying, "The first job is Reception Assistant at the Parkview Hotel." In the table, the position for the Parkview Hotel row is missing, so Reception Assistant is the correct title. |
| Q2 | driving license / driving licence | so you will need to have a valid driving license, and you will not be allowed to do the job if you haven't | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript states that having an official driving license is necessary, and a person cannot do the job without it. Answer Explanation: The answer refers to an official card or document that allows a person to legally drive a car. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is confirmed when the agent talks about the requirements for the job at the Parkview Hotel. The agent explains that guests arrive by car, meaning the worker must drive their vehicles to the car park. Because of this, the applicant must have an official and current driving permit. The prompt asks for something the applicant must "Have a valid [input]", which directly matches "have a valid driving license" from the agent's statement. |
| Q3 | heavy lifting | This is quite a varied job, and in fact I should point out that at certain times of the day it would involve heavy lifting when guests' luggage arrives or perhaps deliveries come in | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that during parts of the day, the worker must lift and carry heavy things like guests' bags and boxes. Answer Explanation: The answer means picking up and moving heavy items with your hands and body. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is confirmed because the agent explains the duties for the Parkview Hotel role. The agent mentions that the work will "involve heavy lifting" when guests' bags arrive or when deliveries come. In the notes, the word "Include" matches the idea of "involve". Therefore, "heavy lifting" correctly completes the blank. |
| Q4 | meals | To be honest, the pay is rather low, but there are compensatory factors, for example, the hotel will provide you with all your meals while you're working | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that the wages are low, but the hotel gives workers food to eat during work hours for free. Answer Explanation: The answer means food provided to you to eat, like breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is confirmed by the agent when describing the General Assistant role at the Lakeside Hotel. The agent notes that although the salary is low, the hotel will "provide you with all your meals while you're working." In English, when an employer provides food at no cost, it means "free meals." |
| Q5 | certificate | they will also train you in all the aspects of the job and then issue you with a certificate, which, of course, could be very valuable to you in the future | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that the Lakeside Hotel will teach the worker how to do the job and will give them an official certificate at the end. Answer Explanation: The answer "certificate" means an official piece of paper that proves a person has completed training or has special skills. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is "certificate" because when discussing the General Assistant role at the Lakeside Hotel, the agent mentions the benefits of the job. Specifically, the agent explains that after training the employee in all parts of the work, the hotel will "issue you with a certificate". In the notes table, "Issue a" matches directly with this statement. |
| Q6 | staff uniform | so you'll need to wear the distinctive staff uniform - which you're provided with | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript states that the worker must wear a special set of work clothes provided by the hotel. Answer Explanation: The answer means the special clothes that workers at the hotel must wear. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is confirmed when the agent talks about the third job, Catering Assistant at Hotel 98. The agent notes that because the hotel caters to special guests, workers are required to wear the "staff uniform", which matches the note prompt "Wear ". |
| Q7 | personal information form | So the first thing you'll need to do is to fill in one of these - a personal information form | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript states clearly that the very first step the student must take is filling out a document with their personal details. Answer Explanation: The answer refers to a document where you write details about yourself, called a personal information form. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is confirmed because the agent explains the first step of the recruitment process to the student. The agent says, "the first thing you'll need to do is to fill in one of these - a personal information form." In the task, "first thing" matches "STEP ONE", and "fill in" is a synonym for "Complete". Therefore, the form that needs to be completed is the "personal information form". |
| Q8 | questionnaire | Once you've done that and handed it in, we'll give you a questionnaire about your skills | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that after completing and submitting the first form, the applicant will receive a questionnaire asking about what skills they have. Answer Explanation: The answer refers to a written set of questions that a person answers to provide information about their abilities. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is "questionnaire" because the agent explains the steps for applying for the jobs. For the second step, the agent states that after handing in the first form, "we'll give you a questionnaire about your skills." In the flow chart, the phrase "Do a [questionnaire] about personal skills" directly corresponds to this instruction. |
| Q9 | role-play activities | You will then proceed to the next step of the process and attend a general course of training. This is designed to be helpful and realistic, so an important part of the course is role-play activities | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that the next step is going to a training class, and a major part of this class consists of role-play exercises. Answer Explanation: The answer refers to practice acting exercises where people act out real work situations to practice their skills. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is confirmed when the agent explains step three of the recruitment process. The agent mentions that after the application steps, the applicant will "attend a general course of training" (matching "Participate a training course"). The agent then notes that a key feature included in this course is "role-play activities", which directly completes what the training course involves. |
| Q10 | video | And after that, the final step is that you will be contacted by the hotel you're going to work for, and they'll post you a video about themselves and the work involved | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript explains that in the last step, the hotel will contact the student and mail them a video describing the hotel and the job. Answer Explanation: The answer "video" means a short film or recording that you can watch. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is "video" because the agent explains the final step in the recruitment process. In this step, the hotel will send the applicant a video showing information about the hotel and the work they will do. The prompt asks what the applicant will "Get ... about the work", which matches receiving this "video". |

Agent: Good morning. May I help you?
Student: Oh, good morning. Is this the Student Job Centre?
Agent: Oh, yes.
Student: Um... I was wondering if perhaps you could tell me a bit about the job, you know, the Hotel Recruitment Program that offers a range of work at the hotels in the area.
Agent: Of course, take a seat, please. I'll take you through some of what we have on offer.
Student: Thank you so much. Oh, wait a second and I'll get my pen.
Agent: OK. The first job is Reception Assistant at the Parkview Hotel. The Parkview Hotel has quite an international flavour, so you'll need to speak at least two foreign languages.
Student: Sure, I can speak fluent French and Spanish, so that's no problem.
Agent: Good. And many guests, of course, travel by car, and you may have to take their vehicles around to the car park, so you will need to have a valid driving license, and you will not be allowed to do the job if you haven't.
Student: OK, I got that.
Agent: Right. And they also say that basic computer skills such as word processing would be an advantage, although this isn't a requirement.
Student: Well, I just got my Computer Skills Certificate, so I have no worries about that.
Agent: This is quite a varied job, and in fact I should point out that at certain times of the day it would involve heavy lifting when guests' luggage arrives or perhaps deliveries come in. Is that OK for you?
Student: Well, it's hard to say at this moment. But I'll bear that in mind when deciding whether to apply for this post.
Agent: Sure. Another job is General Assistant at the Lakeside Hotel. To be honest, the pay is rather low, but there are compensatory factors, for example, the hotel will provide you with all your meals while you're working, and they will also train you in all the aspects of the job and then issue you with a certificate, which, of course, could be very valuable to you in the future.
Student: Oh, that sounds great.
Agent: Now... the third job on offer is Catering Assistant at Hotel 98 smart new premises. As you know, this hotel is popular with exclusive travelers and so you'll need to wear the distinctive staff uniform - which you're provided with. Don't consider this job unless you're fairly flexible about when you work, as the hotel will require you to work nights for this job, and you will need to travel to and from the hotel, as it's situated just outside the city.
Student: Well. I'm afraid I can't manage that because of the lectures.
Agent: OK, I get the picture. So, which one will you prefer, Reception Assistant at the Parkview Hotel or General Assistant at the Lakeside Hotel?
Student: Well, I guess I still couldn't make up my mind right now. Can I have a few days to think about and go back to you later?
Agent: That's no problem. And there are a few things I need to clarify with you. If you would like to apply for one of these jobs, you will need to follow the recruitment process.
Student: Mum...
Agent: So the first thing you'll need to do is to fill in one of these - a personal information form. It's pretty straightforward and should only take you a few minutes. Once you've done that and handed it in, we'll give you a questionnaire about your skills. We then look through the information about you, and pass on our recommendations to the relevant hotel.
Student: Yes, sure.
Agent: You will then proceed to the next step of the process and attend a general course of training. This is designed to be helpful and realistic, so an important part of the course is role-play activities.
Student: That sounds interesting.
Agent: Yes, indeed. And after that, the final step is that you will be contacted by the hotel you're going to work for, and they'll post you a video about themselves and the work involved. Watching this will constitute further and specific training for your job.
Student: Oh, yes. I think I'm very clear now. Thank you for helping me.
Agent: It's a pleasure. Bye.
Student: Bye.
