It is often argued that the primary objective of scientific pursuit should be the enhancement of human welfare. While I acknowledge that improving quality of life is vital justfication for scientific funding, I contend that this perspective is somewhat reductive, as it overlooks the intrinsic value of basic research and the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake.
Undoubtedly, the application of discovery has been the cornerstone of modern human progress. From the development of life-saving vaccines to the implement of renewable energy technologies, science has consistently addressed pressing global challenges, thereby directly elevating living standards. when research is explicitly directed toward solving tangible problems-such as eradicating diseases or ensuring food security- it fulfills a moral imperative to mitigate human suffering, amking the improvement of lives a compelling and necessary goal.
However, confining the scope of science solely to immediate human benefit risks stifling long-term innovation. Much of the breakthrough technology we enjoy today, such as the internet or space exploration, originated from theoretical research that had no clear practical application at the time. If scientists were restricted only to prohects with immediate utility, we might never have ventured into fundamental physics or astronomy, which expand our understanding of the universe. Therefore, science should also be viewed as an intellectual endeavor to satisfy human curiosity, which eventually paves the way for unforeseen advancements in the future.
