When it comes to the issue of learning a foreign language, a significant number of inhabitants stand with different kinds of view. While a good number of individuals tend to learning a second language is only for work or study, others seem to argue that these are not the only reasons. However, I am going to outline both sides of this issue prior to giving a reasoned conclusion.

On the other hand, a great number of merits comes from the first statement in many ways. The first and foremost point is that it is widely believe that learning a second language is essential for those who want to be successful in their future career such as studying or working abroad, as it allows them to comunucate effectively with local people. Another worth mentioning point is that practical needs like travel or employment are the main motivation for learning a new language to navigate and cultural experiences. Last but not least, most of the students in Bangladesh learn and talk English in order to complete their study in western country mainly; thererfore, it maiks them more attractive to large companies.

However, it also seems to be more likely to come up with a couple of advantages from the second statement. To begin with, social reasons like making friends and communicate foreign peers and online interaction, even enjoying literature, enrich personal experience a lot. Moreover, study shows that learning a new language can improve cognitive skills such as memory and problem-solving.

To sum up, having illustrated both sides of this affair, I would like to state my opinion that I strongly agree with the first statement as it comes up with a good number of merits.

Some individuals believe that learning a second language is only for work or travel to another country, while others argue that these are not the only reasons. This essay agrees with the latter point and will show that, despite the strong reasons that motivate people to learn a foreign language, culture and cognitive benefits also can give deep insights into it.

It is widely believed that learning a foreign language is essential for those who want to be successful in their future careers such as studying or working abroad, as it allows them to communicate effectively with locals. Moreover, practical needs like travel or employment are the main motivations for learning a new language to navigate and enjoy cultural experiences. Looking in terms of work, the primary reason usually involves individuals in different courses to become eligible and strong candidates in the job market, since employers are looking for someone who is fluent in at least two different languages. For instance, more than half of Algerian people learn and talk French and English in order to complete their study in France or in Europe mainly; therefore, it makes them more attractive to large companies.

I believe that there are several reasons to learning a foreign language other than work or travel. Social reasons like making friends, communicating with foreign peers, and online interactions, even enjoying literature, films, and music in their original form, enrich personal experiences a lot. Studies have shown that mastering another language can improve cognitive skills such as memory and problem-solving.

In conclusion, despite that work and travel are important reasons to motivate people to learn a second language, in my opinion, I strongly believe that personal growth and cultural enrichment are equally significant.

  3. Gultaj Alizade says:

Nowadays, many people believe the idea that studying a second language is only necessary for travel or work purposes, while others believe that there might be other reasons. However, it is true to say that almost half of people’s motivation to speak a second language might be work or travel related. I firmly believe that there are also social and cultural reasons behind it.

On the one hand, today, a reason behind learning a second language is that many individuals want to be successful in their future careers, or to be able to travel around the world without any communication problems. Looking at it from a work context, the primary reason usually involves individuals in different courses to become eligible and strong candidates in the job market, since employers are looking for someone who is fluent in at least two different languages. For example, one out of every three people speaks at least four languages fluently in Azerbaijan; therefore, it makes them more attractive to large companies.

On the other hand, it is accurate to say that work and travel are not the only aims for people to learn another language. Some people do this for social and cultural reasons, such as being able to read a book in the original language; hence, it helps them to understand the cultural and economic situation of that writer or nation. Additionally, it is the best way to find friends and socialize before even leaving the country. For example, if a person’s mother language is Russian, but he or she also speaks Spanish or French, it means that they can involve themselves in those communities and expand their networks while learning about that culture as well.

In conclusion, while the primary reasons for studying a second language are being able to travel and work, I strongly agree with the idea that it is important to consider the social and cultural importance of speaking another language.
