I did my Erasmus in France, and I didn't know any words in French. When I first landed in France, I noticed that it was not going to be an easy process for me because French people were not willing to speak English with me. Then something happened that changed my perspective about this language barrier. I went to a bank to open an account, and I spoke in English, but the woman told me that she didn't understand me. I realized I needed to learn French, at least to show that I valued the language. So, I started taking some courses in French. After five months, I realized that in supermarkets or banks, I was able to communicate with people on a daily basis, but of course, not in an advanced sense. Overcoming this barrier made me feel accomplished and more connected to the culture around me.
