Okay, that was a story about a national holiday, Nowruz, and during that holiday, we usually prepare a traditional meal called sumalak. This story is related to that meal and it is about how that meal was prepared for the first time. When I heard it for the first time, I was in my secondary school, and we were having a lesson about our holiday, Nowruz. Our teacher told a very interesting story about that meal, and it goes like this: There was a small family consisting of only their mother and two sons. They didn't have a father, so they were in a poor condition. One day, the sons told their mother that they were starving and asked her to make something for them. But as they were in a poor condition, they didn't have many things to prepare an edible meal. So she tried to make something out of the ingredients that were in her house. She found ingredients like wheat and sugar and tried to mix them and boil them over a fire. Maybe she fell asleep; I don't remember this part of the story, but the sumalak cooked overnight in a big pot. In the morning, when she opened her eyes, she looked into that pot and saw a brown thick paste. When she tried it, it was really sweet and edible. So the idea of preparing sumalak in our tradition came from this story. When I heard it for the first time, I was really dumbfounded because I never thought this kind of story existed. I didn't really know sumalak was made from something like this because I always thought it was our traditional meal, and of course, there was someone who came up with this idea, but I never thought sumalak came from that story.
