Well, I know I don't necessarily agree that national museums and galleries should be free. I understand the benefits of them being open to the public for free; for example, foreign tourists can learn more about the culture of the place they are visiting. It also enables local residents to connect with their traditions and history in a more meaningful and tangible way. However, we need to consider that the funding for these projects has to come out of the taxpayers' pockets. I believe that in many countries around the world, there are more immediate problems that need to be addressed. A lot of countries lack proper healthcare. So the government might better fund healthcare, public schools, try to fight homelessness, and provide good welfare programs for their citizens. If those needs and crucial areas are met, then I don't have any objections to governments subsidizing national museums and galleries. I think it could be a very beneficial development.
