The teacher that I would like to talk about was my English teacher from high school. She taught me English as a second language during the 10th and 11th grades. She was from Portland, so she was the first foreign teacher I had. If I had to describe her, she was most likely around her mid-30s. She usually tied her hair in a bun and had these piercing gray eyes. To be honest, I was a little intimidated by her because I found her very stern. She was very much for class participation and speaking up in class, and because I wasn't really used to talking in class, I was a bit nervous. I was kind of the shy kid; I mostly showed my skills through my writing, not through speaking, and I think she noticed that. She would usually push me in class, and I really didn't like it. I would always get frustrated when it was time for English class because I knew that she would pick on me. But now I know that was for the best because she would constantly tell me to do things that she wouldn't tell other people to do. For instance, once she gave me a book report to do on a book that I had never read before, and she wanted me to make a presentation and then present it in front of everyone. She had given me a week. Initially, I was really scared and resentful, wondering why she was picking on me. But when I actually did the book report, I stood in front of the class and spoke. I noticed that it really helped me gain more confidence. In fact, for our GCSEs in English as a second language, we had a speaking test as part of our GCSE exam. I ended up getting the highest in my class, and I do think the reason for that is because she had pushed me so much. I really think she saw my potential and helped me gain the confidence I needed. In fact, even later during my graduation time, I saw her. She had left in early.
