The line graph depicts the percentage of people aged 65 and over in Japan, Sweden, and the USA starting from 1940 to 2020 as well as projections to 2040. Overall, its clear that proportion of people aged 65 and over have grown significantly, albeit at different rates in each country, resulting in remarkably similar percentages.
At the beginning of the graph, the country with the smallest proportion of 65 and older age group was Japan, which was only 5% to be exact. The numbers stayed constant over the next 40 years. However it experienced a growth to 5 units in 2000, then by 2020 reached exactly 20%.
In Sweden however, percentage of 65 and older group was approximately 7% in 1940, which then increased to 20% at the intersection with Japan. Out of all countries the USA maintained the highest proportion of this age group at about 9% in 1940, the rose up to about 18% in 2000. However the numbers has fallen to about 16% in 2020.
By 2040 the the figures in all three countries are expected to grow steadily. During this time Sweden is expected to go up to 25% , the USA up to about 18% and Japan to approximately 26% making it the highest proportion of 65 and older age group.
