Its upward trend continued the following years until it reached a peak of nearly 18% in 2000 and was overtaken by the percentage of old people in Sweden although they both shared the same upward trend in the first 60 years. from 2000, while there was a significant drop in the proportion of people age 60 and over in Japan, this figure is anticipated to rise again to about 23% by 2040.
In the first four decades, although Japan’s figure remained unchanged, it rose sharply and surpassed the share of Sweden in 2020 at 20%. Japan is predicted to be the leading country in the percentage of people who are aged 65 and over by 2040.
