The graph below gives information about the percentage of the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line graph illustrates the proportion of total population in the different cities for the years 1970 and 2040.

In general, in the first year, while people in the Philippines experienced the highest rate of total population, people in Indonesia showed a reverse trend. In addition, the share of total population in Malaysia increased dramatically at the end of years.

In the Philippines, starting at approximately 32% of the percentage of total population witnessed the highest rate in the first ten years before it rose slightly to around a half in 1990. Despite decreasing in the next decade, the figure showed a slight growth to about 55% in the end of years, making it the third position among other cities. Moreover, in Malaysia, the share of the population living in cities was the second highest at 30% in 1970, and this trend is predicted to continue increasing until the end of the period, reaching the peak at 80%, placing it as the highest rate in 2040.

In addition, the population in Thailand and Indonesia climbed significantly in the first two decades, accounting for 29% and 24%, respectively. The percentage of both cities was similar at 30% in 2000. Similarly, having increased gradually, the rate of total population in Indonesia is forecasted that the data will experience a gradual rise in the last year 2040, making it the second highest population among other cities. Conversely, the percentage of the population in Thailand had a reverse trend becoming the last of list at the end of the year.
