In 1985, around 5 million Japanese tourists travelled abroad. This figure grew gradually to about 11 million in 1990, before falling slightly to nearly 10 million in 1991. After that, the number rose sharply, peaking at approximately 15 million visitors in 1995.
As for Australia, its share of the Japanese tourist market stood at around 2% in 1985. It then increased steadily to roughly 5% in 1988, followed by a minor drop to about 4% in 1990. Afterwards, the proportion continued to climb, reaching nearly 7% in 1994, before declining slightly to around 6% in 1995.
