The data provides insight into the preferences of young people in an Australian town on the location and kinds of dance classes they attend.
Overall, most dance classes take place in private studios, and for most youth under 11, ballet is the preferred option of dance type. Young people above 11 engage in modern dance more than any other type.
Private studios are a popular location for classes as about half of dance classes occur there, while just below a quarter take place in school halls. Community halls and other types of halls 18 percent of the classes, while college based studios, the least preferred location type, houses only a tenth of all dance lessons.
Around 600 students under 11 do ballet, the most subscribed dance type among the demographic. For under-11s, engagement in tap dance comes just after ballet’s at roughly 400 students and modern dance has only 300 participants. In contrast, students between 11 – 16 enjoy modern dance (with 520 students) better than the other two options. Participants in tap dance from this demographic are roughly 400, and ballet enjoys the least engagement from them as only 300 of them participate in ballet classes.
