Overall, both countries experienced a downward trend in birth rates over the period. Although both show fluctuation, China’s rate demonstrates a significantly fall compared to the USA.
In 1920, both China and the USA had similar rate of about 10 percent, but the USA remained higher. Between 1935 and 1945, the American’s rate fluctuated between 5% and 15%, while China’s birth rate stayed lower but followed a similar pattern. In 1945, the USA had experienced sharply decline from at approximately 12% to 5%, while China remained constant.
However, China’s birth rate hit the peak at twenty percent in 1950, which was significantly higher than the American at that time. After this highest point, China had encountered dramatically fall below 10% at 1970 and reached about 2% in 1980. In contrast, the United State showed a less decrease. Its birth rate remained at approximately 11%. At the end of the period, the USA’s birth was at about six percent.
