Overall, there are two main stages of the brain to process information, which are short-term memory and long-term memory.
First, the brain receives sensory input. The senses, including sight, hearing, smell, and touch, play an important role in detecting changes from the surroundings. Then, the data is encoded and registered. Next, it is stored in short-term memory. Meanwhile, irrelevant data is ussually forgotten. After that, rehearsal or relevance may move the information to long-term memory. Finally, it can be retrieved when needed.
On the next stage, the signals are transmitted across the brain by neural pathways. In this process, the data is rapidly processed by the mind. Before that, emotional significances can enhance retention. Whereas, the new knowledge is linked to previous experiences by the system. Later, connections are strengthened with practice. In the end, the full memory becomes accessible.
