The table provides information about the change of proportions of individuals taking part in seven different sports in an European county from 1999 to 2009.
Overall, football and basketball experienced a decrease, the reverse trend was true for the remaining categories. Notably, while football was the most preferred sport over time, people paid little attention to golf and yoga.
The figure for football was almost double that of basketball. Specifically, in 1999, football participation secured the top sport at 57%, before falling from 52% in 2004 to 48% in 2009. Meanwhile, basketball followed a marginal decline, from 26% in 1999 to 24% in 2009.
In the first five years, the percentage of people joining swimming rose from 32% to 34%, then it plateaued at 34% in 2009, a negligible difference allowing it to maintain the second position on the chart. Tennis saw the most significant rise, from 25% to 33%, narrowing the gap with the former. During the same period, while the figure for volleyball hovered around 20%, yoga remained stable at 10% until 2004, before rising to 13% in 2009. Conversely, golf attracted only 8% of people, paling in comparison to football (57%) in 1999. Thereafter, it increased from 13% in 2004 to 17% in 2009, climbing out of the bottom position.
