The table compares 7 types of sports in terms of the percentage of people who were interested in them in a particular European county, in 1999, 2004 and 2009
Overall, while tennis, swimming, golf, volleyball and yoga showed an upward trend, the reverse was true for football and basketball. Despite declining, football remained the most popular sport among people.
The percentage of people who were interested in tennis was 25% in initial year. This figure recorded an increase to 30% in 2004, after which it improved to 33% in 2009. Swimming attracted 32% of people in 1999. This trend rose slightly to 34% in 2004 and remained the same in 2009. Golf attracted 8% of people in 1999. The percentage of people who were engaged in golf grew to 13% and this figure again recorded a rise to 17%. 17% of people were involved in volleyball at the beginning of the period. After increasing to 20 in 2004, the percentage of people who were interested in volleyball dropped to 18% in 2009. The proportion of people who were engaged in yoga was 10% in 1999, and it stayed the same in 2004. After a rise, this figure stood at 13% at the end of the period.
In 1999, football was the most popular sport with 57% however, in 2004 and 2009, this figure declined to 52% and 48%, respectively. Starting at 26%, the percentage of people who were involved in basketball decreased to 24% in 2009.
