The tables compare potato consumption and production across five regions of the world in 2006, measured in kilograms per person and tonnes respectively.
Overall, Europe recorded by far the highest level of potato consumption, while Africa consumed the least. In contrast, Asia/Oceania was the largest producer of potatoes, despite having relatively modest consumption levels compared to Europe and North America.
In terms of consumption, Europe stood out considerably, with an average intake of 96.1 kg per person, which was almost double the figure for North America at 57.9 kg per capita. In addition, South and Central America and Asia/Oceania showed relatively similar consumption levels, at 23.6 kg and 25.8 kg respectively. By comparison, Africa recorded the lowest level of potato consumption, at just 14.1 kg per person.
Turning to production, Asia/Oceania dominated with an output of 131.2 million tonnes, closely followed by Europe at 126.3 million tonnes. By contrast, the remaining regions produced significantly smaller quantities. Africa and South and Central America recorded similar production figures of 16.4 million and 15.6 million tonnes respectively, while North America produced a slightly higher amount at 24.7 million tonnes.
