The table compares the proportion of adults in urban and rural areas who engaged in four different leisure activities in two years: 1990 and 2010.
Overall, “reading” consistently witnessed by far the highest percentages in both given years for both areas, particularly for rural areas. In contrast, “photography” accounted for the lowest figure in 1990 for both areas, although it recorded substantial growth.
Focusing first on “reading” and “animated plays”, both categories displayed broadly similar trends. While “animated plays” showed 10% for urban and 18% for rural areas in 1990, and there was stability in urban areas and a reduction to 14% for rural areas in 2010, “reading” increased steadily from 61% in 1990 to 78% by 2010 for urban areas, with the figure rising from 71% in 1990 to 78% by 2010 for rural areas.
Turning to the remaining categories, in 1990 “playing” stood at 26% for rural areas, slightly exceeding that of urban areas (21%). Urban areas stood at 14% with a 7% drop, while rural areas maintained the same proportion as in 1990. Similarly, “photography” grew gradually from 7% in 1990 to 17% by 2010 for urban areas, and rural areas also climbed from 14% in 1990 to 24% in 2010.
