The given bar chart compares statistics on electricity generation per capita from three different sources: fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewables in different regions around the world in 2024.
Overall, the majority of continents predominantly generate electricity from non-renewable sources, except South America and Europe. The former heavily relies on renewable sources, and the latter’s energy generation is relatively more evenly apportioned between all three sources. Additionally, nuclear energy is substantially less prevalent than non-renewable and renewable energy sources.
First, concerning fossil fuel-dependent regions, Africa and Asia led the chart in this respect with 75% and 70% of their electricity per capita derived from non-renewable sources, compared to the 24% and 25% of energy generated from renewables. These figures were markedly higher than Oceania’s 58% and North America’s 56%, and even exceeding the global average of 59%. Interestingly, Oceania was the only continent to not harness nuclear energy for electricity, with its remaining 42% of energy being extracted from renewables. In comparison, North America’s remaining 16% and 28% of electricity was sourced directly from both nuclear energy and renewables.
Turning to the remaining continents, South America was the most renewable-intensive region with 76% of its electricity being derived from renewable sources, more than tripling the 22% obtained from fossil fuels. Meanwhile, Europe demonstrated the most even distribution of energy generation between the listed sources. Specifically, only 40% of the region’s electricity came from fossil fuels, whereas the residual 60% was sourced from nuclear and renewable energy, with the former contributing 21% and the latter 39%, both higher than the global average of 9% and 32%.
