The chart shows an illustration of the estimated number of worlds illliteracy rates according to the regions and gender from the previous year. In general, a noticiable upward trend is seen with the percentage of the female gender over the regions in comparison to that of men.
Over the years, the percentage of illiterate women has been higher than that of men with South Asia having the highest percentage and developing countries having the lowest percentage. Latin America has an approximate 13% illiteracy rate among women, while East Asia has 20%, Sub-Saharan Africa has roughly 49%, the Arab states have 53%, and the highest is found in a region with a rate of about 55%. On the other hand, developing countries recorded the least number in comparison to all the other regions, with about 5%.
In comparison to the percentage of women, that of men is significantly low. However, the chart conveys that the general trend of all regions starts with developing countries in its lowest to South Asia with the highest in both data except for arab states which recorded approximately 28% of its male percentage. Developing countries had almost 4% of illitrate men and Latin america had 10% while east asia had almost 8% , sub saharah 32% and south asia had almost 34%
