Overall, YouTube was the most significant social networking site among others by far during the period. Despite this, the usage of WhatsApp increased more than that of YouTube.
Australian citizens who used YouTube in 2018 were just below 14 million, which climbed to around 16 million in 2019 and experienced another rise in 2020 to under 18 million, the highest number in data. Twitter and Instagram all started just over 4 million and remained relatively steady, a barely more than 4 million from 2018 to 2020, that were the lowest point. Whilst, people utilized Facebook declined over the years. It had just slightly 12 million users in 2018, it gradually dropped to approximately 10 million.
The remaining social media, WhatsApp had a similar trend with YouTube, they growth rapidly in this time frame. However, it was noteworthy that WhatsApp experienced a significant percentage increase in usage compared to YouTube. In 2018, WhatsApp users in Australia reached almost 4 million and rose significantly by more than twice in 2020, to nearly 10 million.
