Overall, tourism from all three countries increased during the ten-year period, with the UK and USA showing particularly strong growth. In terms of accommodation, staying in hotels was consistently more popular than backpacking, although both types rose overall.

In 1995, Japan was the largest source of tourists, with around 1.4 million visitors, followed by the UK at approximately 800,000 and the USA at about 500,000. By 2005, the number of visitors from the UK and USA rose sharply to around 1.5 million each, overtaking Japan, whose figure declined slightly to roughly 1.2 million.

Regarding accommodation, hotel stays increased from about 1.5 million in 1995 to a peak of 2.3 million in 2000, before falling to around 1.3 million in 2005. In contrast, backpacking showed a steady rise throughout the period.
