The bar chart illustrates the proportion of citizens from different groups of ages who lived alone in the USA from 1850 to 2000. The scale is in percentage.
Overall, the greatest numbers of people lived single from the 55-64 age group, and figures for all the age groups increased gradually in the given period of time.
To begin with, in 1850, nearly 3% of Americans aged between 55 and 64 lived alone, followed by 2% of people from 36-47 and 47-54. However, in 1900, the figures of people aged between 55 and 64 increased by around 4%, and approximately 2% of people aged 17 and 26 started living alone, while 3% and just over 3% of citizens aged between 37 and 46 and 47 and 54 lived single.
In addition, in 1950 the percentage of people aged between 55 and 64 rose surprisingly to around 8%, and for all the remaining age groups, it stood between 2 and 3 percentages. Moreover, in 2000 the greatest numbers of individuals lived alone compared to the previous years, and the people from the 55-64 age category stayed the highest, just over 15%, and others stood between 5 and 12 percentages.
