Overall, there were more and more people living alone in the USA during this period. Additionally, the older Americans get, the larger percentage that they account for in the total population of the country.
In 1850, around 4 percent of the American population aged 37-54 lived alone. Citizens from 55 to 64 years old at that time accounted for 3 percent of the country’s population.
Over the following 150 years, the percentage of 37-46 year-olds climbed to 7% of the American population in 2000. In 1900, people with the age from 27 to 36 started to increasingly live alone, and, in 2000, the percentage of them was 8%. 50 years later, youngsters(17-26) also began to live alone more. Their share rose to 5% of the total number of Americans. Finally, 55 to 64 remained the dominant age group, when, in 2000 , its proportion was over 16%.
