Overall, the US spendings on imported seafood increased over these years with some fluctuation. While China imported most of the seafood to the US in 2022, countries like Ecuador, Vietnam and Indonesia imported relatively small portion on that year.
To start with, the US spent about 5.5 billion dollars on seafood imports in 2002, then increased to approximately 10 billion dollars in 2012. In 2022, the total imports skyrocketed by almost 10 billion from the previous year, achieving its peak with almost 20 billion dollars in total. However, the trend was forecasted to decrease slightly by around 2.5 billion in the next ten years.
In 2022, China has contributed 28 percent of US total imports on seafood while Thailand and Canada contributed 23 percent and 18 percent respectively. Moreover, Indonesia has imported 9 percent of US total seafood imports followed by Vietnam and Ecuador, each at 8 percent and 7 percent. Furthermore, other countries contributed 9 percent of the total imports.
