The given bar chart illustrates the proportion of Australian males and females across five age groups (from 18 to 55 and over) who did not engage in any physical exercise in 2005.
Overall, men generally worked out more than women among all age brackets. It is also evident that people of both genders tended to do less exercise as they aged.
For women, inactivity was initially low among younger people, at 18% for those aged 18-24, before rising notably to 27% in the 25-34 age group. The figure then rose steadily to 32% among 35-44-year-olds and 38% for people aged 45-54, eventually reaching its peak at 42% among the 55 and over age group.
A similar upward trend was recorded for men. The proportion of males who did no exercise nearly doubled from 12% in the youngest cohort to 22% for those aged 25-34. Subsequently, 28% of men aged 35-44 were physically inactive, compared with 33% and 36% for the two oldest age groups, respectively.
