The bar chart illustrates the percentages of people in five age groups who attended three types of music events in Australia in 2006.
Overall, it is evident that popular music accounted for the highest proportions among younger people, whereas classical music consistently recorded the lowest figures across almost all age groups. In addition, the popularity of popular music generally declined with age, while opera reached its peak among those aged 35-44.
Looking first at popular music, the figure stood at 38% for the 15-24 age group, making it the highest percentage on the chart. It then fell to 27% among people aged 25-34 before rising to 33% for the 35-44 group. Thereafter, the figure declined sharply to 13% for those aged 45-54 and reached a low of 5% in the oldest age group.
Turning to opera, participation accounted for 13% among the youngest group before increasing slightly to 14% for people aged 25-34. It then peaked at 25% among those aged 35-44, after which it fell to 15% and remained stable for the two oldest groups. Regarding classical music, participation remained relatively stable throughout the period, hovering between 8% and 11% across all age groups.
