The bar chart illustrates the proportion of workforce in Canada in five industries between 1850 and 2020. Overall, it is evident from the chart that workforce in Services displayed an unexpected increase compared to other four industry sectors.
To begin, there were some clear differences between 1850 and 2020, with the gap in Manufacturing sector widening significantly at 36% in 1850 compared to a low 9% in 2020. A similar downward trend in workforce was seen in other industry sectors, namely Agriculture/Fishing and Energy/Water. The percentages of workforce in Agriculture/Fishing and Energy/Water initially stood at 22% and 3% respectively, before dropping sharply to a very low 1% altogether in 2020, and accounting for the lowest proportion of workforce in Canadian industries.
Interestingly though, the pattern for Services and Construction experienced a considerable upward trend. The percentage for Services sector jumped dramatically from just 33% in 1850 to the peak of 81% in 2020, accounting for the highest percentage of Canadian workforce. As for Construction sector, the proportion rose slightly by 3% in 2020.
It can be understood that the proportion of workforce in Services sector experienced the most dramatic progress over the period, whereas other industry sectors were declining correspondingly, with the exception of Construction sector.
