The bar graph presents the percentage of the workforce across five different industries in Canada in 1850 and 2020. Overall, almost all industries recorded a decline, except for the service and construction sectors. Additionally, the service sector made up the majority of the workforce in 2020, while manufacturing was the most dominant in 1850.
In terms of manufacturing, although it had the largest share at 36% in 1850, it fell sharply to 9% in 2020. A similar trend was observed in agriculture, particularly in fishing, which significantly dropped to just 1%. In contrast, the service sector experienced major growth, from the second highest share (33%) to the highest (81%).
On the other hand, the two remaining sectors accounted for less than 10% in both years. However, the construction industry grew marginally by three percentage points to reach 8% in 2020. Meanwhile, the energy or water industry consistenly had the smallest proportion of employment, with 3% in 1850 and 1% in 2020.
