To begin with, in 1850, the manufacturing and service sectors were the largest employers, accounting for 36% and 33% of the workforce, respectively. The agriculture and fishing industry also played a significant role, employing 22% of the workforce. Meanwhile, the construction and energy/water industries were smaller sectors, employing just 5% and 3%, respectively.
By 2020, the percentage of workers in the service industry had risen dramatically, making up 81% of the workforce, which is a 48% increase from 1850. In contrast, the manufacturing and agriculture/fishing sectors saw a notable decline of 9% and 1%.
