The chart illustrates the number of men and women in further education in Britain over three periods between 1970/71 and 1990/91, whether they were studying full time or part-time.
In 1970/70, males significantly outnumbered females in part-time education, with approximately 1million men where as the women were only 700,00 women. However this trend reversed by 1990/91 as the women in part time education slightly increased that of men. Meanwhile, the figures for full time education were low for both men and women throughout the three periods starting at about 100,000 first men and approximately 50,000 for women in 1970/71, and ending at 200,000 for both genders in 1990/91.
In 1980/81 the gap between men and women in part-time education had narrowed the number of men decreased to around 850,000, while women significantly increased to 750,000. Full time education also showed an increase for both genders with men participation doubling and female participation quadrupling. This period showed more progress for women in further education.
