The bar chart compares the percentage of students who chose between three science disciplines in a university from 1992 to 2012.
Overall, the figures for males fell, while females rose. As for science subjects, the proportion of students taking biology and physics decreased; however, the share of undergraduates who applied for computer science increased dramatically.
As far as gender is concerned, in 1992 males dominated at approximately 65%, and ten years later noticeably decreased to exactly 50%. By contrast, the female proportion received significant growth from 30% in 1992 to just over 50% in 2012.
Focusing on the subjects, both biology and physics, despite being the most favored disciplines, stood at around 65% and 25% in 1992; however, biology classes over the period continued to be the most favored class for students, falling to approximately 43%, and physics to exactly 20% over the period. Meanwhile, in 1992, undergraduates choosing computer science accounted for the lowest figures at 5%; in the final year, its popularity increased, surpassing physics at 5%.
